Don’t forget to give your children the gift of a good picture book or ten! Today I’m recommending what I think are the best children’s picture books of 2014.
The Best Picture Books from 2014
1. It’s Okay to Make Mistakes by Todd Parr
I love the message of this picture book – that it’s okay to make mistakes. In fact not only will this book help remind kids that making mistakes is totally normal and okay, maybe it will help remind us to show our kids that we make mistakes, too. Another excellent book by the talented Todd Parr.
2. This Is a Moose by Richard T. Morris, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld
Hilarious picture book about a moose who wants to be an astronaut. But the narrator of this book says no way and neither can giraffes, who shouldn’t be in the woods in the first place, be doctors. The narrator gets more irked in this silly adventure.
3. Book with no Pictures by B. J. Novak
You might think a book with no pictures seems boring and serious. Except . . . here’s how books work. Everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say . . . BLORK. Or BLUURF. Even if the words are a preposterous song about eating ants for breakfast, or just a list of astonishingly goofy sounds like BLAGGITY BLAGGITY and GLIBBITY GLOBBITY. Hilarious!
4. Gaston by Kelly DiPucchio, illustrated by Christian Robinson
An enchanting picture book story about Mrs. Poodle’s puppies, Fi-Fi, Foo-Foo, Ooh-La-La, and Gaston. Even though Gaston doesn’t look or even act like her little puppies, it doesn’t matter until they meet Mrs. Bulldog’s puppies in the park and realize Gaston is a bulldog and Mrs. Bulldog’s Antoinette is a poodle. But trading back puppies doesn’t work, Gaston misses his poodle family and Antoinette misses her bulldog family. And it turns out that love and family means much more than DNA. A lovely picture book!
5. Once Upon an Alphabet Short Stories for All the Letters by Oliver Jeffers
My kids and I ADORE this amazing picture book! Oliver Jeffers writes wonderfully quirky (of course) short stories for each letter, the stories connect (of course) and it’s an alphabet adventure like nothing you’ve experienced (of course) with a LOT of laughs!
6. Quest by Aaron Becker
Quest is a gorgeous picture book written only in pictures that will transport you to a magical world. My kids and I poured over every beautiful detail in the pictures and so will you. You’ll follow a boy and girl with a purple (magical) bird on their quest to save the king and his kingdom. Awe-inspiring. What quest are we really on?
7. Mix It Up! by Herve Tullet
Remember the book Press Here? The same author/illustrator has expanded the idea into color mixing fun. Rub a little red on the blue and you get purple. Shake, press, mix . . . It’s interactive reading times a zillion and lots of fun!
Which picture book will you buy for your children?
