Guys Read Short Stories Invite Boys Into (a Different Kind of) Reading

Jon Scieszka wants boys to become “self-motivated, lifelong readers.” Which is why he founded Guys Read. Guys Read is both a literacy program and books of short stories specifically for elementary and middle school boys to encourage reading. And there’s a LOT to love about reading short stories — they’re, well, short, and the stories, written by a variety of authors, are all very different.

According to research, boys are lagging behind in reading. Not only this, boys are saying they don’t like reading.

Guys Read wants this to change.

The short stories in the Guys Read books make it easy for boys to pick and choose any story. Because choice is essential. They can skip stories, reread favorite stories, and start with just one short story at a time.

In addition to choice, short stories in a collection like this are written by many different authors, giving kids many writing styles to try. Hopefully, boys will connect with new authors to read in the future.

Short stories also gives boys a broad glimpse of genres so boys will start to figure out what appeals to them as far as genre.

The latest volume in the collection is the terrific Guys Read: Heroes & Villains with stories written by Laurie Halse Anderson, Sharon Creech, Jack Gantos, Christopher Healy, Pam Muñoz Ryan, Lemony Snicket, and others. (Jon Scieszka edits all of the books.) The stories explode with different flavors — from an irreverent fairy tale to an immigrant’s crossing to a Russian mobster adventure. You won’t be bored and will find it fun to read and compare which stories you liked best.
