Harry Potter Potions Class Experiments

Want to make some magical Harry Potter potions? If you have a Harry Potter fan in your house, you’ll want to try this Harry Potter Potions Class and with exciting experiments– either for a birthday party or just for fun.

Don’t miss this list of good books to read if you love the HP books and want more magical adventure stories.

We did these potions activities for my daughter’s Harry Potter birthday party and the experiments were their FAVORITE! The party also included 1) getting sorted into your wizard house, 2) writing your own spells, 3) dressing up like your favorite character (Hermione, Harry, Professor Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, Remis Lupin, or whoever), and wand making. Food included Bertie Bott’s Flavor Beans, Butter Beer (see below), and cake.

Harry Potter Potions Class Experiments

Gather your supplies and ingredients. Cover your table with a plastic table cloth.

Print out the directions, slide them into a plastic sleeve, and distribute them to the students in your potions class. (Or birthday party.)

Wear safety goggles just in case. (Also, because they look smashing.)

Get started with your experiments!

Bonus Butter Beer Experiments:

Make Your Own Butterbeer!! (EDIBLE)

We tried several Butterbeer recipes — taste-tested and voted on which was best. It was YUMMY fun – but don’t drink let your wizards and witches drink too much of these all at once because they are VERY sweet.

#1 Butterbeer Recipe from Wizarding World Park

  • 1 quart vanilla ice cream
  • 1/4 cup butterscotch syrup
  • 32 oz of your favorite cream soda

Directions:

  1. Place glasses in freezer and chill.
  2. Mix ice cream with cream soda in a blender.
  3. Pour into glasses.
  4. Top each glass with whipped cream.
  5. Serve with spoons and straws.

#2 Homemade Butterbeer from OffBeat and Inspired

1 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tbsp. salted butter
2 tbsp + 1 tbsp. pure maple syrup
1/2 tsp. fine sea salt
8 oz. cream soda per mug

Chill your mugs in the freezer.

Melt butter and 2 tbsp. maple syrup in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until lightly bubbling. Remove from heat.

Add heavy cream, salt, and remaining tbsp. of maple syrup to a bowl. Beat with a hand mixer until smooth. Slowly add the heated maple butter mixture to the whipped cream, continuing to mix until combined.

Grab your mugs from the freezer and add 1/4 cup of maple buttercream to the bottom of each. Stir cream soda to almost fill each glass. Skim off the soda bubbles, and top with maple buttercream.

#3 Homemade Butterbeer from Design Lively

– Root Beer
– Half and Half
– Imitation Butter extract
– Fluff

First, add about half of the container of Fluff and 1 cup of half and half. Stir it with a mixer until it’s foamy!

Fill your glass with root beer and add butter extract.

Stir. Add a few spoonfuls to your glass.

Delicious and FUN!

How did you do in potions class today?

Keep making potions like a wolfsbane potion, draught of peace, felix felicis (liquid luck), a healing potion, or a love potion by finding fun liquid science experiments that you can rename to suit your wizardry purposes. Remember, the hardest potion to make are Voldemort’s Cave Potion, the Elixir of Life, and the Draught of Peace so make those experiments extra tricky!

And, if you want to get extra specific, here is a list of some of the potion colors according to the books.

Amortentia is pink.

Felix Felicis is orange.

Polyjuice Potion is green.

Veritaserum is red.

Wolfsbane is yellow.

  1. Hello. Can someone please tell me what to use for “bat dung”? It wasn’t included in the ingredient key. Thank you!

  2. Hello! When you put in the yeast—-is it dry yeast, or is it mixed with water first? Thank you–we are looking forward to doing these at my son’s birthday party!

  3. What is the translation for dream fluid? I don’t see it listed on the ingredients translation.
