Free YouTube App for Kids

I’m thrilled with Google’s release of a free YouTube Kids app, it’s been too long in coming quite frankly. This app will finally make YouTube watching safer for kids since the channels are pre-screened and kid-friendly. So far I’m impressed with the functionality as well as the selection of YouTube channels and parental controls. (And so grateful there are no comments!!)
FREE YouTube App for Kids
The YouTube app for kids is available on Google Play and iTunes, and soon on Kurio and Nabi kids’ tablets.
In the YouTube app, the menu options are: shows, music, learning, and explore as well as a search function.
Once you select a channel, you’ll see the choices for that channel as you can see from the above screen shot of Steve Spangler’s SpanglerEffect.
Also, while you’re watching a video, you can click to see the other options on that same channel.
Some notable channels are: DreamWorksTV, Jim Henson TV, Mother Goose Club, Talking Tom and Friends, National Geographic Kids, Reading Rainbow, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Sesame Street.
YouTube App: Parental Controls
Parents can control some of the options within the app:
- Timer: There’s a built-in timer that lets you limit kids’ screen time. The app alerts your child when the session is over, so you don’t have to.
- Sound settings: You can turn off the background music and sound effects.
- Search settings: You can turn off search.
Pretty awesome, right?
