Teach Kids How to Write a List Poem

Kids can easily write a list poem using their powers of observation. This is a GREAT way to start young kids with writing poems. Especially if children are intimidated by poetry.
How to Write a List Poem
1. Write a list of nouns on one side of the paper.
Everything
You
See
Somewhere
Like
The
Park
Or
The
Backyard
2. Then add verbs to all those things. What are those things doing?
Grass grows
Trees whisper
Flowers bathe
Voila!
3. OR add adjectives in front of the nouns like this:
golden grass
lavender flowers
speedy ants
And you’ve written a poem!
Practice more list poems with other topics.
Then, see if kids can write a poem in free verse without the list approach.
Have fun!
