1. Plenty of space for growing writers with writing & wide-ruled lines.
Growing writers whose handwriting is still developing need these larger spaces in which to write, so the paperback journal is the size of a composition notebook. The printed download is the size of a piece of paper–8.5″ x 11″. Children need the structure of wide ruled lines on the paper so their ideas can flow.
2. Review pages include open-ended question prompts.
Kids don’t know how to review a book, so I’ve included prompts for each review page to get them started. These include:
- Would you change anything about the book? What?
- What was the book mostly about?
- What was your favorite part?
- What was the most interesting part?
- What was the problem in the book?
3. Includes lots of fun book-related creative activities, too!
Kids will love the activity pages that include activities like:
- designing your own book cover
- coloring pages
- a word search
- rewriting the ending
- comparing yourself to the main character
- writing a letter to the author
4. With three adorably cute characters, kids can pick their favorite one.
Cute characters designed by artist Alice Nainer include
- a book dragon
- a reading mouse (Italy’s version of a bookworm!)
- a horned rabbit
The playful, fun creatures are sure to inspire enthusiasm as kids debate which ones are their favorites.
5. Written Melissa Taylor, a former teacher with an M.Ed.
Trust that the reading journal will be engaging and educational since it was created by former teacher and literacy trainer Melissa Taylor, the founder of Imagination Soup.

I’m Melissa Taylor.
I’m a former teacher and mom of two! I’m passionate about getting kids excited about reading.
Not only that, I’m a children’s book expert, a former literacy trainer, and a freelance writer with an MA in Education.
But, like you, I’ve had children and students who go through ups and downs with their reading.
And I understand how hard it can be to motivate and encourage kids to read.
I’ve spent my career working with children in this area. I’ve found ways to hook kids on books.
This is why I created this reading journal for kids with illustrator Alice Nainer!
Using my knowledge of what kids like, reading instruction, and educational best practices, I wrote activities for children and journal pages to motivate readers!
This reading journal is a MUST for every young reader! As a previous homeschooler, reading journals were a big part of our day. What makes this journal unique is that it is jam-packed with fun activities to accompany the standard review format (e.g., coloring pages, survey questions, word searches, comparisons, etc.). ALL children of ALL reading levels will find fun ways to connect with the stories they read. If you want to inspire your readers to engage with books, this is the journal for you!
