Options for Finding E-Book Deals
You basically have two options.:
1. Libby
Libby is the library app connected to Overdrive. All you need is your library card number and you’ll be able to check out and download FREE e-books and audiobooks.
2a. Amazon: FreeTimeunlimited Subscription
Amazon offers plenty of children’s e-book options for free or cheap. FREE applies to a new service called FreeTimeunlimited. And it’s FREE for one month!!
FreeTimeunlimited gives you access to thousands of children’s books for $4.99 a month (after a free trial month) or $2.99 for Prime members. If you want this for multiple children, the cost is $9.99 for up to four kids or $6.99 for Prime members.
Check out the library of book selections for ages 3 to 5, ages 6 to 8, and ages 9 to 12 by clicking through and scrolling down.
Alternatively, you’ll notice on some children’s e-books like Tacky the Penguin that the book is included in FreeTimeunlimited. In this case, this particular e-book costs the same as the unlimited membership, $4.99.
One beneficial feature of the FreeTimeunlimited is the parental controls to manage settings, monitor or set time limits, set filters, and more.
2b. Amazon eBooks (+ Narration)
Of course, instead of a membership, you can always buy and download e-books on Amazon. These will be downloaded to any device you pick.
In addition, I want to mention a very cool feature (albeit, a bit pricey) of audio narration. Look closely because some books let you add an Audible book narration to your eBook download. This allows your readers to listen while they read…or listen first and then read…or just listen.
Notice the details on this screenshot for the chapter book Lost in the Pacific.
- 1 shows you the price of the Kindle book. ($3.99)
- 2 is where you can see if Audible narration is available and if so, how much it costs. Add it to your purchase and you’ll be able to hear the story while you read. ($7.49.)
- 3 is where you can get a sample of the book…try before you buy.
3. EPIC!

- Phone with the Kindle app
- Kindle Fire ($49.99 right now!!)
- Kindle Fire Kids Edition ($199.99)

I think your kids will enjoy these fun-to-read, action and mystery books with fantastic characters and storylines as much as I did.
Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland *WITH AUDIBLE NARRATION
$3.99
My daughter LOVES this series about a group of dragonets who leave their protectors’ safety and are captured by a vengeful faction of dragons. The dragonets might be the long-awaited dragons of the prophecy that will end the dragon wars for good. One thing’s for sure: when the dragonets are captured, things don’t look good for their survival.
Lost in the Pacific, 1942: Not a Drop to Drink by Tod Olson *WITH AUDIBLE NARRATION
$3.99
Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes
$1.99
This book is brilliantly written for so many reasons. First of all, because it addresses the very real issue of police violence against black children but it does not vilify or stereotype. Second of all, the author shows us the complexity of issues and the humanity of a police officer from the perspective of his daughter. After Jerome is unjustly shot, he becomes a ghost. Sarah, the police officer’s daughter, sees and talks to him but he can also see other ghost boys who were killed in racially motivated violence. It’s a well-written, fast-paced story about important current events.
Coraline by Neil Gaiman *WITH AUDIBLE NARRATION
$4.99
This book shows Gaiman’s incredible storytelling ability. It’s about a girl, Coraline, who discovers an alternative reality identical to her own — same house, same mother and father — through a little door in her house. It’s a world that at first seems wonderful yet it becomes frightening when Coraline realizes she might not get to leave. Very creepy.
Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz
$3.99
An unforgettable story about 10-year-old Yanek’s time in the concentration camps. Can he survive the horror, starvation, and brutality?
Rump by Liesl Shurtliff
$4.99
In this surprisingly thoughtful story from Rumplestiltskin’s perspective, Rump discovers the difference between who he knows he is versus who others say that he is. After Rump learns that he’s trapped in his mom’s magical “rumple”, it explains why he feels compelled to make straw into gold for any trade that someone offers him. Of course, this is what the miller takes advantage of, leaving Rump without options or control over the trades. With the help of his troll friends, his friend Red, and his aunts, Rump finds a way to stop the magical curse and give the queen back her child. You’ll find plenty of themes to discuss with 6th graders from this fractured fairy tale.
Ice Dogs by Terry Lynn Johnson *WITH AUDIBLE NARRATION
$1.99
This looks like an exciting adventure of survival. Victoria is a 14-year-old dogsled racer who gets lost — and is forced to survive with no food and temps dropping.
Storm Runners by Roland Smith *WITH AUDIBLE NARRATION
$3.99
Smith always writes non-stop action and adventure books. This series is about what happens when a hurricane hits, flips the school bus, and Chase and his classmates are stuck in a swamp. Be warned, the first book ends on a cliff-hanger but there are three in the series so you can keep reading with book two, The Surge.
The Poet’s Dog by Patricia MacLachlan *WITH AUDIBLE NARRATION
$1.99
Short but filled with tenderness! When a grief-stricken dog rescues two lost children in a terrible snowstorm, he takes them to the cabin of his former friend, a poet named Sylvan who rescued him years before. Told from the dog’s perspective we watch them bond and wonder if maybe the kids have saved the dog as much as he saved them. (And the beautiful ending WILL make you cry!)
